ICAO, from 27 March 2026

No more than two power banks per passenger, in carry-on baggage only. A power bank must not be recharged on board. Using it to charge other devices is not recommended. This is the minimum: airlines can be stricter, and many ban both.

Power Bank Rules, Explained

Airlines apply their own limits on top of the general lithium-battery safety framework.

Carry-on only

Power banks are treated as spare lithium batteries and should not travel in checked baggage.

Capacity matters

100 Wh is a common threshold, but airline policies differ: some allow up to 160 Wh, sometimes with approval, while others cap power banks at 100 Wh.

Onboard rules differ

Airlines separately control whether you can use, charge and store a power bank during the flight.

How to Check Your Power Bank

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a power bank in checked baggage?

No. The airline rules verified for this checker require power banks to stay in the passenger cabin as spare lithium batteries.

Is a 20,000 mAh power bank allowed?

Often, but mAh alone is not enough. At 3.7 V, 20,000 mAh is about 74 Wh. The airline’s quantity, marking, storage and onboard-use rules still apply.

What if my power bank is over 100 Wh?

It depends on the airline. Some permit 100–160 Wh, sometimes only with prior approval, while many current airline policies cap power banks at 100 Wh.

Can I use my power bank during the flight?

It depends on the airline. Several carriers now prohibit onboard use completely, while others permit it only outside taxi, take-off and landing.

Which airline should I check on a codeshare?

Use the operating carrier for each flight segment, because battery restrictions can differ between airlines.
